If you missed Laird on ABC’s ‘Nightline News’ this past Friday check it out here.

Laird sums up this winter of nonstop swells. When the monster waves came this winter he headed to Maui to surf Peahi aka ‘Jaws’. Otherwise at his home base in Kauai, Laird’s adventures have been big wave surfing, stand up paddle surfing, body-surfing, and foil boarding. Laird spends half the year in Malibu, CA training, and waiting to get back to Hawaii to do what he loves, surf big waves.

Incredible footage of Laird Hamilton, Terry Chun, Kawika Goodale, Randall Ososkoda, and Nelson Kubach foil boarding Hanalei Bay. These guys may make it look easy but don’t be fooled. It takes a lot of core strength, leg strength, and balance beyond just surfing ability.

During the summer months in Malibu, Laird enjoys teaching his friends how to get up on the foil board. It can be exhausting and only the strong can endure the countless falls, topples, and crashes before getting a consistent minute or two on top of the water. Some walk away with a feeling of defeat and some get to enjoy a huge sense of accomplishment.

Awesome footage. First time I’ve seen a really convincing cutback on a foil. Still, the prospect of getting rolled a few times while strapped to an AirChair seems really scary; the foil looks like a blender-blade. I don’t want to end up in a smoothie (even if it does contain Catie’s Greens… ;-)
